AGREEMENT ON PAY FOR PLASTERERS MAY INCREASE HOUSE COSTS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 24. Dearer houses throughout New Zealand may result from an agreement between “old time” master plasterers in the Canterbury and New Zealand Plasterers’ Union, according to a statement made in the Arbitration Court today by the employers’ advocate. Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, when seeking an award for the Wellington district.

Mr, Mountjoy said it had been . the practice in all districts except Canterbury for unskilled workers to be employed to cast fibrous plaster sheets. The present award rate for a journeyman fibrous plasterer was 4s Old per hour and the rate for a fibrous plaster caster was 3s B:,‘d hourly. The Canterbury award made the same rates apply for both, said Mr. Mountjoy. adding that it was the only one in New Zealand where the same rate applied for skilled and semi-skilled labour. Union Endeavour

He said that the union, having succeeded in obtaining the same rate for casters as for journeymen in Canterbury. was attempting to apply the same rate to other parts of New Zealand. Apart from restricting the use of fibrous piaster this would increase the cost considerably and result in clearer houses where fibrous plaster was used, said Mr. Mountjoy. Mr. N. Hildreth, secretary of the New Zealand (exceot Otago and Southland) Plasterers and Related Trades Union, in opposing the application for a separate Wellington award, said that the union was ouite happy to accept the status quo in relation to the employment, of semi-skilled workers.' He wished to make it clear that it was not intended to challenge Ihe existing conditions in the national award in this l esncct.

The president of the court. Judge Tyndall, said a decision would be given after the luncheon adjournment as to whether or not a Wellington district award would be made.

The hearing was adjourned. It is expected that it will be continued in a few days.
