Told to Children

“Sparks Among the Stubble” (Oxford University Press) is a book of short stories which were told to evacuated children by Elfrida Fipont, a Quakeress, who conducted a school for evacuees during the war. These are all true stories about people who lived in different times and places whose faith enabled them to overcome difficulties. The stories were written and published because the children to whom they were first told asked that they should be put into a book. “Sandy. The Red Deer. (Oxford University Press) is a lovely story of the Highlands and the red deer which live there. We watch the deer through the eyes of Roddie and Flora Mackenzie and their father Murdo. who is a stalker. The author F. Fraser Darling. tells the story, with all the fascination of fact. We are given living pictures of the wild rugged Highlands and the habits of the red deer not only in the lilting words of the story, but also from the excellent illustralions. Kiddeli-Munroe is <1 distinguished artist of animal life.
