N.Z. Hockey Tourists Beat Tasmania

(10 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 26. The New Zealand hockey team defeated Tasmania by one goal to nil yesterday. Peacock scored the only goal in the first spell. The best players were I. Smith, Armstrong and Turner. Although playing below their best, the visitors revealed an improvement and towards the finish excelled in brilliant stickwork and combination. Accurate passing by Armstrong and Munro combated the bustling tactics by Tasmania. For most of the match the ball was mostly in the New Zealand area. Mr. Keith Falconer, the manager, said it was the first dry ground the visitors had struck in 16 matches. They had won 12. drew twice and lost once during the tour. Twelve of the 17 players had had the ’flu but were now. all fit. New South Wales defeated Victoria by two goals to one. The winners irmde. more use of their scoring opportunities. Victoria was frequently frustrated by the packed defence, particularly in the second half. Giving a fast brilliant display. South Australia deposed West Australia in top place, defeating it by three goals to two. South Australia now shares the leading position with New South Wales.
