CONFIDENCE IN SAFEGUARDS TO DOMINION TRADE

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 25. “There is no doubt that New Zealand's trade position and the benefits of Empire preference will be safeguarded at the international trade conference in England.” Mr. S. Howard Hunter, president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, said this on his return today from Wellington where he and members of the manufacturers' executive had discussions with the Prime Minister, Mr. S. G. Holland, the .Minister of Commerce, Mr. C. M. Bowden, and the Minister of External Affairs, Mr. F. W. Doidge.' The talks embraced aspects of the Geneva and Havana agreements on tariffs and trade, and particularly the issues for discussion at the Torquay conference in September by representatives of 40 or more countries. Manufacturers were encouraged by the interest being taken by the Government, particularly by Mr. Bowden, said Mr. Howard Hunter.

An announcement of any delegation the Government might decide to send was expected soon.
