"Missing Rail Link": Hope For Route Survey
“We hope iha our request for a survey of the proposed route for the northern rail link will be undertaken,” said the president of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, Mr. R. G. Clare, at a meeting of the chamber last evening.
“The reason for quietness and the fact that we have not been aggressive lately in prosecuting our proposal has been to allow the new Government to settle down.
“We have been in touch with tha Government over it, but we cannot expect it to spring into action with men and materials —all we are asking at the moment is for a survey to be made in the provision of the missing link in the North Island railway system.” Another matter of national importance which he referred to in the presence of the Dominion president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Mr. H. E. Schofield, and the Dominion secretary, Mr. A. O. Heany, was the subject of overseas shipping. “The shipping position has become acute over the last year, particularly in rH >'•'(> to certain main ports. The cl" • been active in the matter r far as to interview the r Minister. Mr. P. Fraser. 1 .1 to take up the matter v . .',n Minister, Mr. S. G. Holla: members of the Cabinet,’ said
Mr. u..;_e. “We are making progress and the latest information available is favourable to returning some of the shipping to some of the former loading ports.
