Scientific Liaison Officer In London To Advise N.Z. Council

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 25. Dr. E. Marsden, who for three years has been New Zealand’s scientific liaison officer in London, will return to the Dominion temporarily for a short period to discuss overseas scientific developments with the Minister in charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Mr. K. J. Holyoake. and members of tlie Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr. Holyoake said after a meeting of the Cabinet last night that Dr. Marsden had attended numerous conferences on scientific matters in the United Kingdom and on the Continent and it had been decided that the knowledge he had gained should be disseminated. “Dr. Marsden represents the Dominion in scientific matters at the highest level and is, therefore, in a position to keep this country abreast of all civil and defence scientific developments and policy,” said Mr. Holyoake. “He is the deputy chairman of the working party in London of the Commonwealth advisory committee on defence science and is the head of the New Zealand delegation now attending the second meeting of the committee in London.

“It is important that he should be personally aware of the work in defence science proceeding in this country and what is likely to be possible with the facilities here.” The Minister added that it also was highly desirable that Dr. Marsden should be able to report directly to the annual conference of the New Zealand defence scientific advisory committee in December next. Through Dr. Marsden New Zealand was able to obtain the benefits of research work being carried out on a scale far larger than was possible here. Before going to London Dr. Marsden was the secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
