S.P.C.A. INSPECTOR GETS RESULTS ON DISTRICT VISIT

Satisfaction with results achieved as a result of the recent visit of Mr. R. H. James, chief inspector of the New Zealand Federation of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was expressed at a meeting of the Gisborne district society held last evening. Mrs. A. J. Terry presided at the meeting, which was well attended.

It was reported that Mr. James had found stock men most co-operative in organising improved conditions for the holding of animals in connection with sales and slaughtering for public consumption. when the need for some improvement was pointed out to them. The chief inspector’s experience in other districts had enabled him to recognise without delay certain defects in such matters as water supply and overcrowding which had escaped the attention of local authorities and agencies. Junior Division. The importance of interesting young people in the work of the society has long been recognised, and the Gisborne organisation has the nucleus of a useful junior division. The committee received with pleasure an intimation that an official badge for junior members had been designed by the federation, and that supplies will be made available shortly to the various districts. In a discussion on finances it was mentioned that a recent jumble sale had drawn encouraging support, so much so that many items which arrived rather late in the morning were available only after the public had exhausted the initial stocks and the sale had closed down. The committee had had many promises of continued support, and in view of this fact it was decided to conduct another sale at the Parish Hall on June 30.

Reports of honorary officers indicated that few cases of cruelty to animals had been observed in recent weeks.
