S.L And W.Z. Straight Huntaway Title Won By Nelson Dog
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. June 24. R. H. Mead (Nelson) with his five and a-hulf-year-old smooth-coated black and tan collie, Rome, won both the New Zealand and South Island straight huntaway championships at the sheep clog trials at Tai Tapu yesterday. Rome won the South Island title at Blenheim last year.
The placings were:— New Zealand Championship.—R. H. Mead's (Nelson) Rome, first run 96J points, second run 954, total 192. 1: S. Birdling's (Poranui) Storm. 94. 94|, 1884 2: J. A. C. McKenzie’s (Oamaru) Syd. 914. 95J. 187. 3: D. A. B. Morrison's (Makotuku) Glen, 93. 92. 185, 4: O. A. Paterson's (Oamaru) Nell, 92, 92-)>. 1844, 5: J. Falconer's (Tarras) Jim, 934, 89, 1824. 6: R. H. Davis’ (Raetihi) Joe] 924, 80. 1724, 7. South Island Championship (decided on first run).—Mead’s Rome 964, 1; Birdling’s Storm 94. 2; Falconer’s Jim, 934, 3: Morrison's Glen 93, 4: Davis’ Joe 924. 5: Paterson’s Nell 92, 6; McKenzie's Syd 914, 7. With 60 of the 159 dogs entered in the head, pull and yard championship having so far made runs, the best performances have been by D. Sutherland’s (Macrae's Flat) Queen, R. M. Wilson's (Kirwec) Moss. S. Herbert’s (Pongaroa) Boy. J. R. Gillespie's (Wainukurau) Little Lady, T. Brankin's (Little River) Mac. W. J. Craig's (Napier) Dick and W. B. Lawrence's (Uruti) Fly.
