SEDGMAN UPSET IN LONDON TENNIS TOURNEY
(10 n.m.) LONDON, June 23. The American fourth ranking player, Art Larsen, defeated Australia's No. 1 player, Frank Sedgman, in the men’s singles semi-finals of the London tennis championships at Queen’s Club today. Sedeman was suffering from a strained wrist, which forced his withdrawal from the men's doubles. Sedgman will play his first-round match in the Wimbledon championships which begin on Monday, but it is un’ikel.v he will be able to continue in (he tournament unless his wrist quickly responds to treatment. The Australian. John Bromwich, scored a good win today over the South African champion, Eric Sturgess, In (he women’s semi-finals. Mrs. Doris Hart defeated the title-holder. Miss Louise Brough—seeded No. 1 at Wimbledon. Results: Men’s Singles.—Semi-finals: Larsen d. Sedgman. 6-1. 6-2: Bromwich d. Sburgess. 6-1. 6-4. Women's Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss Hart beat Miss Brough. 10-12. 6-4. 7-5: Mrs. Du Pont cl. Mrs. Todd. 6-2. 6-1. Men’s Doubles. —Semi-finals: Talbert and Mullov beat Sidwell and Brown, 6-3. 6-2: Bromwich and Quist beat Worthington and Rose. 6-4. 1-6. 9-7. Two New Zealanders. W. ,T. Smith and A. W. Tills, have qualified for the men's singles championship at Wimbledon.
In the women's semi-finals. Miss Mandelbaum, of Egypt, and Tills plays C. Carmona, of the Philippines.
