GISBORNE HAS WIN IN THISTLE CLUBS’ SOCCER AT RESERVE
By Half-Back. On Saturday afternoon at the Childers Road Reserve the P.B. Football Association conducted the first round of the King's Birthday competitions. Gisborne Thistle defeated Huntlv Thistle in their return match in Gisborne by four goals to one. Rangers defeated Eastern Union and qualified for the Cup final. Results: —
Senior.—Gisborne Thistle 4 v. Huntly Thistle 1; Rangers 2 v, Eastern Union
Junior.—Rangers 4v. Rovers nil: Thistle 4 v. Wanderers nil. From the start of the game between Huntly and Gisborne, two players immediately stood out. They were the opposing goal-keepers, Man?, Wcrff, a tall well-built Dutchman, who defended exceptionally well for Huntly, and F. Capes, who was no less conspicuous in the home goal. Gisborne were first to draw blood when the ball was deflected into the goal past Werff by a defending Huntly player. Gisborne pressed to the Huntly penalty area from the kick-off. Again Han? WeriT stood out in the defence. T. Morland and G. Hall, Huntly’s two fullbacks. worked well and were responsible for breaking up many Gisborne attacks. A. Easton was prominent in the Gisborne attack and sent in many shots which beat Werff only to rebound from the crossbar and uprights. Gisborne scored again when A. Easton netted the ball after a scrimmage in the Huntly goal-mouth. Huntly returned to the attack but F. Capes continued to shine in the Gisborne goal. Easton Scores Again A. Easton again put the ball in the not for Gisborne during a scrimmage in the Huntly goal. Huntly Thistle seemed to have the upper hand in the second half and D. Slater, at idght half backed up the inside right, J. Stewart, and the right wing K. Stirling, in their frequent attacks. Easton scored his third goal for Gisborne at the finish of a fine forward dash in which A. Ramsey and R. Humphries combined well. Shortly afterwards D. Patrick broke through and scored for Huntly with a nice shot after a tussle in the Gisborne goal-mouth. The game ended in midfield with no further score. The referee was Mr. W. Allan. Rangers defeated Eastern Union 2-1 to qualify for the final. J. Carlton scored for Eastern Union, while P. Robinson and a Union defender scored for Rangers. The referee was Mr. H. Jamieson.
In the junior competition Rangers defeated Rovers. 4-0. The scorers for Rangers were B. Thomas. E. Millar. T. Kirk, and H. Cudd. Thistle beat Wanderers by the same score, pointsgetters being E. Hickman (2), V. Hall and J. Ric.e one each.
