Few Newcomers In Australian Entries For Big jumping Contests
MELBOURNE.
Hurdlers and steeplechasers are in ,ull training for the big winter jumping season now beginning here. Chatsof, last year’s winner of Grand National Hurdle, after only one previous start over jumps, is the early favourite for this year’s event. Three horses, Worrowing, Parilla’s Pride and Benarca share top position in the market for the- Grand National Steeplechase.
The Grand National Hurdle, of CA3OOO, will be run over three miles at Flemington racecourse, on July 1. The Grand National Steeplechase, of £3500, will be run over three miles and one furlong also at Flemington on July 8. The only disappointing feature of excellent entries received was the small number of newcomers. This has been offset by the number of previous winners entered again.
Grand National winners in this year's hurdle field are Bay David (1945), Eudunda (1947), The Feline (1948), and Chatsol (1949). Former steeplechase winners entered again arc Quixotic (1945), Formidable (1947), and Tcnte (1948).
Two champions last year, David Star and Shot By, winner and runner-up respectively in 1949 Grand National Steeplechase, are both dead.—Reuter.
