The committee consists of Dr. Duncan Cook, of the Health Department, who is the chairman, Mr. G. R. Lee, Wellington accountant and also secretary of the Private Hospitals' Association, and Mr. Turner Smith, a Christchurch public accountant.
They have taken evidence in committee. Dr. Cook said today that hospital licensees and their accountants had been questioned on hospital costs. Several private hospitals had also been inspected. A report is to be made to the Minister of Health, Mr. J. T. Watts, after the committee hears evidence in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington.
THAMES DISTINCTION. While Thames has for some time enjoyed fame in the possession of 13 hotels, it is not so well known that it has for many years had an equal number of churches. At a time when the number of hotels is likely to be reduced by tile Licensing Control Commission, the number of churches is on the increase. A fourteenth church, that of the Brethren assembly, will be opened during the weekend. The church, which is a wooden building constructed entirely by voluntary labour, will hold 150.
