“Not Prepared To Renew License To Present Applicant”
The committee was of the opinion that the grounds of the objection had been proved and it was not prepared to renew the license to the present applicant, said the chairman of the Gisborne Licensing Committee, Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M.. when the committee on Thursday dealt with an application by the present licensee of the Waiapu Hotel at Tikitiki. Michael Hyland, tor renewal of his publican's license. Mr. Walton said the application fell into the same category as most of the others who sought renewals, and along with those the matter would be adjourned until the next quarterly meeting. In effect, the committee’s annual meeting would be adjourned till September. Counsel’s Submissions The applicant was represented by Mr. G. J. Jeune. Senior-Sergeant G. S. Norris appeared for the police and Mr. K. Gillanders Scott for 10 district electors.
Mr. Jeune, in addressing the committee, referred to the evidence and said the objections had become necessary to attempt to straighten out an unfortunate situation. The applicant did not realise that he had reached a stage where he was too old to carry on the business, said counsel. The publicity to the matter had been unfortunate from the point of view of the applicant’s family who had been unable to prevail upon him to hand over to another licensee.
Application For Costs
“My task is to ensure that the license is retained tor the premises,” said Mr. Jeune. “If the committee is not prepared to renew in the name of the applicant a short time is requested to endeavour to arrange a transfer. In this way the license can be kept alive and it will allow for placing everything in order,” said counsel. The committee was of the opinion that the grounds of the objection had been proved and it was not prepared to renew the license to the applicant, said the chairman. He added that a reasonable opportunity would be given to enable the position to be remedied and a reasonable time would be allowed for steps to be taken. An application by Mr. Scott for costs for the electors who had attended the hearing to give evidence was adjourned for consideration at the next meeting.
