NAPIER STUDENTS’ CRICKET DOUBLE: FIRST STRIKE WINS

Napier Boys’ High School had two cricket successes against Gisborne High School yesterday. The first eleven, playing in Gisborne, left on their return journey by train this morning taking with them the Cricket Challenge Cup, having retained it by 22 runs on the first innings. The Napier second eleven won their match in Napier by 25 runs on the first innings.

The match in Gisborne was notable for the determined attempt of the Gisborne side to reach and pass the Napier innings total of 174. McDonald played a splendid innings in which he carried his bat for 68 runs before being bowled by Leadbetter, who, with Thompson, led the Nanier assault on the home batsmen. Karauria and Askew both made useful contributions, but the Gisborne innings closed at 4.30 p.m. 22 runs short of the Napier total. The decision was then declared in favour of Napier.
