AUCKLAND FIRMS’ PLAN HOUSES FOR MIGRANTS

(P.A.'i AUCKLAND, March 30 Two Auckland Industrial firms will build homes for workers in an effort to persuade British immigrants to take iobs et factories Both have been forced to restrict production because of a shortage of labour. New Zealand Glass Manufacturers Company, Pty., Limited will spend £6OOO on building 25 huts at Penrose for 50 single men who they hope to obtain from a draft of immigrants due here in May. The company also plans to spend a big sum on building three large blocks of flats for married workers. This will make 18 family units available.

The Ellcrsiie Borough Council approved the erection of the huts, which will be of the same type used by the Ministry of Works for housing workers. Three hot meals daily will be provided for immigrants at the company’s cafeteria and the firm plans to convert a large building at the works into a recreational centre.

The firm of Phillips and Impey will build at Ellerslie a block of four threebedroom flats to house specialist work ers whom the firm is bringing from Britain with their families. They will be employed in the firm’s glass industry.

“Skilled workers of this kind are not available here. ’ said a representative of the firm today.
