BRISBANE MAYOR PUTS CIVIC BAN ON RED DEAN

BRISBANE, March 30,

The Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Mr. J. B. Chandler, said yesterday that lie would neither receive nor give a civic reception to the Dean of Canterbury, Dr. Hewlett Johnson, who will attend the Australian peace council congress in Melbourne next month and then visit other Australian capitals. Mr. Chandler added that he could not understand how a Christian minister could justify his support of a regime noted for its callous brutality, both to its enemies and its own people and engaged in systematic persecution and terrorism against the Christian Church. It would be improper for him, as Lord Mayor, to do anything which might, however remotely, assist the organisation which he regarded as Australia’s most deadly menace.
