SOUTHWARD SPREAD OF VEGETABLE BUG
The green vegetable bug, Nezara viridula L.. found to be established at Te Kaha last year, has spread southwards to Waipiro Bay. Many of the Waipiro Bay household gardens have become infested with the pest, and crops of vegetables have suffered much damage. As described in the Herald recently, the bug has many host plants and is damaging to nearly all vegetables, tree tomatoes, citrus, passionfruit, and probably many other fruits, sweet corn, maize and various weeds and grasses. Comprehensive spraying tests are expected to be undertaken with DDT and other comparatively new insecticides during the present season. Further reports of the spread of the infestation in this district would be appreciated by the Herald or the Department of Agriculture.
