VON LUCKNER PAYS TRIBUTE TO N.Z. POLICE CAPTOR
NEW YORK, March 10. Count von Luckner, commander of the raider Seeadler in World War I, said yesterday that he surrendered to the New Zealand policeman, Inspector Harry Clifton Hills, because to fight in civilian clothes would have been an act of piracy. Mr. Hills died in Auckland last Sunday. Von Luckner, who paid tribute to Mr. Hills’ bravery, said that after the Seeadler was wrecked in the Society Islands he and six men in a lifeboat’ which contained a plentiful supply of arms reached the island of Wakaya. He was planning to capture the sloop on the harbour when the steamship put off. Von Luckner added that he thought he would capture both the sloop and the steamship until he realised he was in civilian clothes and decided he would lose his honour if he fought.
