FRENCH REFUSAL OF PLEBISCITE ON SAAR AREA COAL
(9 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 16. The Associated Press correspondent at Bonn says that the French Foreign Minister, M. Robert Schuman, last night rejected the German demands for a plebiscite to determine the fate of the Saar coal region after a two-hour talk with the West German Prime Minister, Dr. Adenauer. M. Schuman said: “The people of the Saar do not want a plebiscite."
German politicians recently demanded a referendum among the Saar’s 800,000 population. M. Schuman said that the exchange of views was important because it was the first time the French and German Governments had been able to discuss the question of the Saar.
