DOLLAR REVENUE LOST BY LOBSTER INDUSTRY STRIKE
PERTH, Jan. 16,
Australia’s dollar-earning capacity suffered a blow when about 150 lobster fisherman from Langelin and Cervantes Islands went on strike because of dissatisfaction at the prices paid them. About 20 boats arrived at Fremantle from the fishing grounds yesterday and others are patrolling the islands to see that no crayfish boats go out. About 35 boats are idle and crayfish tails packed in dry ice will be flown to America until the dispute is settled. Crayfish tails have become an important part of Australia’s export trade to America and the strike will mean a daily loss of about 7515 dollars to the Commonwealth as the exports had reached 93001 b. of tails daily. In America the tails sell at from 75 to 90 cents per lb.
The fishermen have acted because the price they received dropped from Is to 9d per lb.
