GARDEN HOSES TO BE BANNED IF WATER SUPPLY GETS ACUTE
GISBORNE DECISION
The relief in the water situation in the Gisborne Borough experienced by residents for general purposes as a result of the rain over the past few days is regarded as only temporary, and a return of the conditions characterising the Christmas and New Year holidays is not unlikely. Steps to deal with supply difficulties in the event of the conditions returning have been taken.
These were decided on at a special meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council last night when, despite the temporary relief, it was agreed to empower the town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, to apply with full force the by-law prohibiting the use of water for any but essential purposes. The decision of the council does not take effect immediately, but arms the council's chief executive ofheer with full authority to deal with any emergency. Should last week's torrid conditions return, the town cleric, is in a position to notijy all residents in the reticulated area that the use- of hoses for gardening ■purposes is absolutely prohibited. Incidental to this was the recision of an earlier motion on the council's books permitting the use of hoses for gardens on an hourly rationing basisIt has been pointed out repeatedly that the council’s water supply was not designed to furnish water for other than industrial and domestic purposes and that the use of garden hoses always has been at the pleasure of tlic council.
The meeting, which was a committee meeting of the council, was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. N. 11. Bull.
