Prospects Of More Australian Coal For Export Trade

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 17. Australia may soon be in a position to resume her exports of high-grade coal to New Zealand, according to Mr. E. E. Warren, chairman of the Northern Colliery Proprietors’ Association, who arrived in the Wanganella today for a business visit of three weeks. Colliery owners, he said, were hopeful that the record. 14,000.000 tons, tor 1942, would be surpassed this year and that the Commonwealth would be able to export coal not only to New Zealand, but to old customers like Hong Kong and the Philippines. “I am sure that Australia faces a happy industrial era.'' said Mr. Warren. '•'Coni production is increasing all the time-” The difficulty facing Australian mine owners was to get an accurate survey of Australia's own needs. Her industries were expanding all the time.

Mr. Warren has just returned from a tour of the Continent of Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States and says he has not. seen any better coal than Australian. The Ruhr coalmines were rapidly increasing production and America was over-produc-ing.
