Steward Remanded On Manslaughter Charge
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. The police prosectuion against Cyril Henry Marston, a ship’s steward, aged 25, who is charged with manslaughter as the result of a shooting incident aboard the Haparangi in which Carolie Joyce Taylor was killed, will be heard in the Magistrae’s Couprt on January 25 before Mr. J. Hessell, S.M.
Today, Marston was remanded until then. Applying for bail, the accused’s counsel said that when Marston first appeared in court his ship had left port and he had been friendless since then. However, friends had come forward and had offered to find bail and securities. They would also provide Marston with a home until the case had been disposed of.
Marston was second steward on the Haparangi, was married and his home was In Belfast.
The police urged that if bail was granted it should be substantial as the accused was not a native of New Zealand and the charge was a serious one.
The charge against Marston is that on January 6 by unlawful act to wit by pointing a loaded revolver at Carolie Joyce Taylor and by pulling the trigger he caused her death and thereby committed manslaughter. Following a discussion in chambers the magistrate refused bail.
