YOUNG MAN DROWNED NEAR WANGANUI
(P.A.) WANGANUI, Jan. 16. A young man lost his life at the Mowhanau (Rai Iwi)) Beach near Wanganui on Saturday afternoon. He was: Mr. Kenneth Hammond, aged 21, a son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Hammond, Poukiore, Hunterville.
At about 4.15 p.m. on Saturday at a point about 30 yards off the shore where the Kai Iwi Stream enters the sea, a man was noticed to be in difficulties. Mr. Harold George Greathead, went to his assistance. He noticed that the man was floating face downwards and appeared to be unconscious. When near the man Mr. Greathead was overbalanced by a big wave and when he regained balance the man he was trying to reach had disappeared. A search made for the body was unsuccessful that afternoon, but the body was found yesterday morning about 4.30, washed up on the beach. Mr. Hammond was a clerk employed in the merchandise department of Levin and Company’s Wanganui branch.
