NO INCREASE IN RIDING ALLOWANCE FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN

A reauest for an increased travelling allowance for children who ride to school on horseback has been declined bv the Deoartment of Education. The reauest was made by Federated Farmers and the Hawke’s Bay Education Board.

In a letter received by the board at its meeting last week, the department stated that it had considered the application and it had been decided that the present allowance compared favourably with the grant for children travelling to school in motor vehicles. “We can’t do much about it. We will iust have to receive the letter.” commented Mr T. A. Coleman, who presided in the absence of the chairman, Mr. A. H. Sivewright.
