BAPTIST WARNING OF POSSIBLE DARK DAYS AHEAD

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Nov. 3. The sixty-seventh annual assembly of the Baptist Union of New Zealand and the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society was officially opened in the Tabernacle last night. Addresses of welcome were given by the deputyMavor, Mr. J. L. Coakley, the president of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Churches, the Rev. J. Douglas, and the secretary of the Auckland assembly committee, Mr. A. T. Down.

Mr. Coakley said that the Baptist churches displayed heartening virility which indicated the large measure of Divine blessing on their work. Mr. Smith said that Christianity was facing forces in the world today that were a , great menace to it. Unless Christianity became more effective a dark day would surely come for the church. Union was necessary.

Replies on behalf of the delegates were made by Mr. W. Carey (Wellington). and the Rev. A. Fear (Greymouth). A service was held following the welcome tea and the newlyappointed president, the Rev. E. W. Batts, of Dunedin, was introduced by the retiring president, Mr. H. W. Milner, of Wellington.
