Time-Saving On Air-Mail Parcels: ’Phone Addresses

One of the. major drawbacks to the use of air-mail for parcel dispatch is to be removed by a new system now being adopted by the Post and Telegraph Department, by which addressees who are telephone subscribers will be advised that air-express parcels are available for collection. Parcels forwarded by air-mail are usually sent by that means to ensure quick transit and delivery. Up to the present it has been found, however, that the time saved by express transit has been lost through parcels lying in Ihe office of delivery up to 24 hours awaiting normal delivery. It has therefore, been decided that if senders of air-mail parcels can quote the telephone numbers of the adclressees the numbers will be used to acquaint .the addressees of the fact that parcels aWait delivery The service can only be given in the meantime in centres where mail is handled direct from aerodromes. The telephoned information to any addressee will include advice as to where the parcel may be picked up. If the parcel is not claimed in the meantime. it will be sent out for delivery in the usual way. The department intends to provide a special gummed label to carry telephone numbers on air-mail packages, but until these become available senders will be encouraged to incorporate telephone numbers of adressees in the addressing of packages. If the actual number is unknown, the post office will endeavour to make contact with an addressee if the word “Telephone” is clearly marked on the package.
