IRISH LIVING LONGER:CHANGE IN POPULATION

LONDON, Oct. 20. Eire has reached the stage when her population has begun rapidly to age, creating old-age pensioners in striking disproportion to the population as a whole. This is disclosed in an interim report on the census of population taken in 1946 and issued in Dublin tonight by the Central Office of Statistics. There are 115,000 more people aged 65 and over in Eire out of a total population of 2,955,000 than there were a century ago when the population was 6,529,000. Eire lost in the century 3,574,000 people or more than half her population through emigration. This, with a sharp fall in births, plus greater expectation of life through improved conditions. accounts for the ageing character of the population.
