EUROPE SWELTERS IN HOTTEST SEPT. DAY FOR CENTURY

LONDON. Sept. 5. Heat haze shimmered over most of Europe today as many cities reported the hottest September day for a century. Londoners sweltered in a humid temperature of 83 degrees and freak thunderstorms, some lasting only 90 seconds, soaked many people. Paris registered 91 degrees. In Brussels, where the temperature was 90 degrees, office and factory workers organised lunchtime bathing parties. The Hague, with 91.4 degrees, had its hottest day this summer and a September record for more than 100 years.
