ARCHDEACON O’DONNELL

HOBART, Sept. 5.

The death has occurred of Archdeacon Thomas Joseph O’Donnell, aged 72. He toured Australia in 1916 advocating conscription and later served in France as a chaplain. When in Dublin in 1917 he was mistaken for the leader of a new Irish rebellion and placed in the Tower of London. He ably defended himself and proved his innocence in the most famous court-martial of the war. Later, lie took a keen interest in politics. often clashing with the Labour leaders.

He was an ardent campaigner against bank nationalisation and when he died he was plaintiff in a £IO,OOO libel suit against an anti-Catholic newspaper. ■
