Denial Of Suggestion Concerning Mr. Nash’s Visit To Southland
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 6. "A statement made in Parliament last week by the member for Invercargill. Mr. J. R. Hanan, to the effect that the Minister of Finance, Mr. W. Nash, flew to Invercargill in a special chartered plane for the purpose of attending a Labour Party bazaar, which only 60 people attended is a deliberate distortion of fact,” said the president of the Invercargill Laobur Representation Committee, Mr. J. Cronin, yesterday.
“The Labour Party did hold a bazaar some time ago. The Minister of Finance, who was in Invercargill on Government business and who met several deputations during his trip south, was asked to open the bazaar. Mr. Nash consented. "The attendance was several hundreds, not 60 as alleged by Mr. Hanan. Mr. Hanan may also be interested to know that the Invercargill L.R.C. cleared more than £6OO as a result of this effort —a sum impossible to achieve had the attendance been as stated by the member for Invercargill."
