Drunken Drivers Given Warning In Otago Court

(P A.) DUNEDIN. Sept. 5. Unless the circumstances were unusual motorists convicted of being intoxicated while in charge of motor cars would in future run the very grave risk of being gaoled, said Mr. J. D. Willis. S.M., in what be described as a “final warning” in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Mr. Willis quoted figures showing that during 1943 there were 39 convictions in the Dunedin courts for this offence while Auckland, with a population three times as great, had only 43. The figures for Wellington and Christchurch each twice as large as Dunedin, was onlv 35. For the 19 months ended on July 31 of this year the figure for Dunedin was 51. compared with Auckland, (14; Wellington. 63: and Christchurch, 54. "The figures show a scandalous state of affairs in this city.” said the magistrate. “It will not be tolerated any longer.

“I have repeated ad nauseam that drivers convicted of this offence arc fortunate that thev do not appear in court on a manslaughter charge.”
