NEW BLOOD LEADS IN TITLE TOURNEY: FENWICK DEFEATED
MEN’S GOLF
The championship record of the P.B. Golf Club will bear a new name this season, in connection with the open championship tourney which was scheduled to close today. The defeat of E. S. Toogood and F. Fenwick in successive rounds of match play yesterday removed the principal contestants of recent years, and left the semi-final and final stages of the title tussle among J. T- Dodgshun, R. i. Harrison. G. H. Stewart and J. H. Mansfield.
Harrison’s survival sustained the interest in visitors' performances, for although he formerly played with the P.B. club he is now a resident of Norswood. Three P.B. Club Finalists The other three semi-finalists are all well-known members of the host club, and in the earlier rounds of the fixture showed stubborn determination which promised good contests in today’s rounds.
The defeat of Fenwick by J- T. Dodgshun was the highlight of yesterday afternoon's play, the match being decided on the eighteenth green, where the scratch man failed with a comparatively easy putt after fighting an uphill fight to offset Dodgshun’3 early lead. Making a patchy start, he had lost the first two holes to his opponent and, with a win and a loss in the next seven, made the turn still two down.
Dodgshun won the tenth and was three up, but going round the back Fenwick took the thirteenth and fourteenth, and squared the match at the sixteenth, where Dodgshun played a little through the green. At the seventeenth both got good drives away and their seconds were well up to the green, although Dodgshun had the more difficult lie and line for his third. He made a fine shot to within a few feet of the pin. and both putting well here the hoie was halved in fours.
Critical Shot from Bunker
Dodgshun put his second at the eighteenth handy to the green. Fenwick found himself bunkered and had to play a difficult shot to the pin. Dodgshun rolled up close and Fenwick’s explosion shot also gave him a good position from which he had a fair chance of a half to keep the match going. He lipped the cup, however, and was beaten when his opponent holed cut for four.
Harrison had a lead of two at the twelfth, and eventually ran out the winner, 3 and 2, against W. Morete. The latter's long drives were a little unreliable at times, but he dropped his holes chiefly through faulty approach shots. Harrison was solid all the way and played up to his scratch rating.
A tough battle between G. H. Stewart and B. Jenkins finished at the sixteenth, where the former player was three up. Jenkins gave a good account of himself, but in the heavy condition of the fairways produced by pouring rain was a little astray with his iron shots.
Ifuti Player Finishes Well
An early lead established by J- H. Mansfield against the Hutt player, 1). Ross, decided the fourth semi-final. After being two down at the turn R'oss developed extreme accuracy considering the conditions, and was particularly good on the greens: but he could not break down Mansfield’s lead, and eventually was beaten, 2 and 1.
The Aucklander, R. Hay-MacKenzie, established a strong hand in the Barrington Miller Challenge Cup handicap. defeating R. C. Smythe 3 and 2 after conceding him several strokes. S. Randell, Tauranga, also scored a clearcut win over R. C. Bauld. Wairoa, and A. Barns-Graham was well in the picture with a good win over R- F. Hutchinson.
Good competition was. seen in the minor competitions and flights, only a small proportion of the matches being defaulted in the face of highly unpleasant weather conditions throughout the afternoon. Afternoon matches resulted — P.B. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
