Four Films Banned Out Of 1573 Viewed By Dominion Censor
(P.R.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. Four films submitted to the New Zealand film censor iast year were rejected outright out of a total of 1573. Appeals lodged with the Board of Appeal for three of them were disallowed. Approval, subject to excisions, was given for 85, while 28 were passed with the warning they were not suitable for children and 154 were passed with the recommendation that they were more suitable for adult audiences.
The annual report of the Internal Affairs Department which gives these figures also reveals that of the 368 feature films G 5 were British, against 54 the previous year. Foreign films also showed a slight increase, the total being 302 compared with 298. One film came from Australia.
Of the foreign films an overwhelming proportion, 290, were American. France contributed five, Italy three, India two and Austria and Russia one each. The report says it was noticeable that films of the “gangster” type were not very much in evidence. Those that were submitted ‘were not quite so lurid in theme” and treatment as those examined in the previous year.
