Wellington Extended By P.B. Junior Soccer Reps.

By “Dribbler” In the second round of the Junior National Cup competition Wellington defeated Poverty Bay by four goals to three when the two" provincial teams met on Saturday at the Childers road Reserve. The match attracted the largest crowd of Soccer supporters seen since before the war and was well deserving of this increased interest. The polish of the visitors in the first half and the determined comeback staged by the home team in the second kept the game alive With excitement and interest. The Wellington boys accustomed themselves more readily to the sodden ground than the Poverty Bay players did ancl their rapid scoring early in the piece was not at all encouraging to even the most optimistic home supporter. However, profitting by their mistakes in the first half, the Gisborne lads, following the interval, improved to the extent where they not only held their own with their more experienced opponents but gained the ascendancy in everything but points. Both individually and collectively Wellington were the better team and Won oh their ability as such. Team work was not quite so evident in the Poverty Bay side, but the fine fighting spirit shown singly enabled them to fully extend the visitors. The teams were:—

Wellington (black).—Jackson; James, Ede; Smith, Strauss, Tingay; McGilloray Turnball, Harrison, captain, Sinden, Poverty Bay (scarlet). Forbes; Torrie. Jamieson; Murray (capt.), Fletcher. Stone: Christianson, Cudd, Morrow, Neilson, Lawrence. Wellington’s Early Start Wellington opened the scoring in the second minute of play when, following miskicking by the Poverty Bay backs, McGilloray crossed the ball from the right for Scaife to score a good goal. Excellent passing saw Wellington again penetfate sOon after and Scaife put his side two up with a second goal.—Wellington, 2; Poverty Bay, nil. Poverty Bay held their own for a time following this, but a surprise backheeling move by the visitors' forwards resulted in Harrison sending in a fast low shot which Forbes, the Bay custodian, misjudged as going outside the upright and let go. The ball, however, sped into the net to put Wellington three in the lead. Swift, sure passing again had the home backs in difficulties soon after this, but good covering up by Stone saved the situation, The Southerners were not to be denied for long, however. and Tingay was successful in adding a fourth goal.—Wellington, 4; Poverty Bay, nil. P.B. Forwards Brighten Up

Led chiefly by Neilson, the home forwards counter-attacked frequently, but their movements lacked finish, finally Neilson penetrated down the left and crossed the ball to Christianson, who headed it goal-wards, Morrow following in fast to find the net. —Wellington, 4; Poverty Bay 1. This put zest into the efforts of the Bay players and aggressive play by Cu'ad nearly led to a further score. Breaking through on the right, Cudd sent in a good shot which was fisted clear, but Fletcher, coming up fast to make an extra man in attack, caught the ball in his stride and crashed it into the cross bar. Half-time came with the score unchanged at Wellington, 4; Poverty Bay, 1. P.B. Dominate Play

The second half saw Poverty Bay dominate play throughout. Murray and Fletcher re-opened hostitilities by moving the ball up and Cudd tried hard to finish the movement, but had his kick charged down. Murray again instigated an attacking movement, with a pass to the right wing, Christianson crossing the ball nicely only to see it cleared by backs more mobile than the home inside forwards.

Fletcher was next to have a try, but his shot following a throw-in skewed off. Poverty Bay’s determined efforts were rewarded soon afterwards, however, Neilson sending the ball out to Christianson who transferred it to Cudd for the latter to shoot, Morrow again following in fast to head the ball past the goalie. Wellington, 4; Poverty Bay 2. McGHloray’s Fine Run

At this stage Wellington again came into the picture, Scaife and Sinden combining well to counter-attack down the left. Hard pressed, Poverty Bay conceded three corners on end and Forbes had difficulty in smothering shots, but came through meritoriously. , Then came one of the highlights of 'the match, a dazzling run down the right wing by McGilloray, who beat three men cleanly and then sent in a superb centre. The ball was travelling across to the unmarked left wing and but for a timely interception by Forbes a goal might have resulted. Emulating this feat at the other end Neilson was again instrumental in Poverty Bay scoring. Neatly beating two opponents. Neilson crossed the ball into the centre and the bustling tactics now being employed by the other inside forwards resulted in a Wellington defender kicking the ball into his own goal. Poverty Bay pressed to the finish but could not secure the equaliser and the final score read: Wellington, 4; Poverty Bay. 3. Mr. W. Allen was the referee.
