S. AUSTRALIA BUILDS TWO MORE BIG FREIGHTERS
ADELAIDE, July 25,
A start had been made on the building of two more 12,500-ton ships of the Iron Yampi class at the Whyalla shipyards, the Federal Opposition Leader, Mr. Menzies, was told during an inspection with the Premier, Mr. Playford. In addition, two 6000-ton freighters were being constructed, and the programme provided for four 10,000-tonners later.
Mr. Menzies described the shipyard industry as one of the most modern in the world.
Now employing 900 men, the yards, which have five slips, are capable of providing work for 2000 men. The 12.500-ton class ships are expected to take 18 months to complete. Mr. Menzies was told that the Iron Kimberley—second of the 12,500-ton ships—would have Its trials in September. and would be commissioned immediately for the iron ore trade.
