“MR. MATAWAI” QUEST RAISES £420 FOR HALL MR. J. J. THOMPSON WINS
(Herald Correspondent.) The “Mr. Matawai” quest for the Matawai Memorial Hall fund came to a very successful conclusion on Saturday. A dance ended a fortnight of intense activities. The four committees, football. Maoris, bowlers and sports, were. very active during this period raising money by card evenings and a garden party held at Mr. H. Bulst’s home. The successful candidate was Mr. J. J. Thompson, who represented the .football committee. A fitting climax to the festivities was the investiture ceremony, ably conducted by Mr. Arthur Thompson. A feature of the afternoon entertainment was the procession which drew spontaneous applause from the large crowd Prizes were awarded by the two judges, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Willson, as follow:—Tiny tots: Gwennith Judd. Best boy: Derek Mortleman. Best girl: Lorna Mortleman. Special: Mary Mortleman. Best decorated vehicle: R. 11. Beaufoy. Thanks were expressed to all those who had helped during the campaign. The carnival resulted in £420 being raised, and. as this now places the funds within sight of the target, it is felt that as the Memorial Hall when completed will benefu the whole of the hill country district, the same support will be forthcoming from residents even further afield than those who have already assisted so generously.
