FERTILIZER WORKS FOR SOUTHLAND: FARMERS’ SUPPORT

The support of Federated Farmers in the establishment of the proposed co-operative fertiliser works in Southland was sought by a deputation from the company, consisting of a provisional director, Mr. Adam Hamilton, and the secretary, Mr. D. M- Malloch, when they met the Southland provincial executive of Federated Farmers in Invercargill. After Mr. Hamilton had addressed the meeting, a motion was carried to the effect that Federated Farmers approved the steps taken by the provisional directorate, and requested it to go ahead, at the same time submitting more concrete proposals. Mr Hamilton said that at a meeting ot (lie Southland Co-operative Fertilizer Company last month it .was agreed that the time was opportune to take definite steps for the establishment of a modern works in Southland. The capital needed was estimated at about £350,000 on a co-operative basis. It had been agreed, however, to refrain from canvassing for the share capital until supporters of the new freezing works had finished their canvass of the farmers. Circumstances had now changed, continued Mr. Hamilton, and he hoped the canvassing for the share capital for the proposed fertiliser works could be started early in 1950.
