WORK ON NEW ELECTORAL ROLL GOING AHEAD

PREPARATIONS for the compiling of n new electoral roll are well in hand in Gisborne, bat it is expected that a good deal of work will have to be done within the next two or three months before the roll can be placed in the hands of the printers.

For the past six weeks a temporary officer has been engaged at the Gisborne courthouse in re-compiling the last, main roll, which was issued prior to the general elections in 1946. His iob at present is to go through the roll and send a notice to any person who did not vote at the recent licensing poll. These notices, dispatched to the last known address of the elector. ask for confirmation of that address, Should the notice be returned unopened, a registered notice is sent to the same address. Only when that is returned is the person struck off the Gisborne roll.

Already 3500 first notices have been sent nut and it is expected that 6000 will have gone through the Gisborne Post Office before the job is finished. Those who cast their vote at the licensing poll are taken to be living at the same address unless they have advised the electoral officer otherwise. More Names Being- Added

More names are being added to the rolls every day as those who have attained the age of 21 years register. Poisons who have shifted from another district and now have the necessary qualification of three months in the Gisborne electorate are also required to register.

Since the main, roll was compiled in 1946 two supplementary rolls have been made up. one a short time after the closing of the main roll and another in March of this year for the licensing poll. It would appear that yet another supplementary roll will be made up this year prior to the conscription issue going to the polls. At the lime of the closing ot the last supplementary rolls 16,422 electors were registered in the Gisborne electoral district. It would not be surprising to find this number had touched 18,000 by November of this year.
