EPITHET PAINTED OUTSIDE HOME OF UNION ORGANISER

(PA) AUCKLAND. May 23. Painted in white in characters of 12in. high the word “scab” appeared at about 8 30 o’clock last evening on the pavement outside the home of Mr. L. D. Murphy the organiser for the new Auckland Carpenters and Joiners’ Society.

The painting was done while Mr. Murphy and his wife were away from home for two hours. It was still wet when they returned. Three of the family were at home, but neither saw nor heard anybody near the house.

“My first reaction was one of annoyance " Mr. Murphy said today, “not only’ because of my wife’s agitation, but also because my children would have to face the charge at school. “I was told weeks ago that children at various schools were calling one another ‘scabs.’ “There is no doubt in my mind that certain people are extremely annoyed at the decision of the Federation of Labour conference in Wellington on Friday. Obviously they intend now to renew ' their intimidatory tactics.”
