Lei Ball. The Nga-Tama-Toa dining hall was the centre of attraction last Saturday evening, when a successful lei ball was held at Hiruharama in aid of the Hikurangi basketball and hockey combined clubs. The Kiwi Orchestra provided the music. Card Evenings. The Gaiety Theatre supper room has been the meeting point for informal social and card evenings every Wednesday for several weeks. Funds raised go towards the Anglican Church building programme. Winners of the weekly competition one week were Miss D. Hickey and Mr. Morgan. Mrs. Ward acted as hostess. This week’s competition, at which Mrs. Ward again was hostess, was won by Mr. R. Atkins and Mrs. Hickey. Visit of Mr. Guv Cassin. Hockey enthusiasts in Ruatoria took the opportunity on Wednesday afternoon of attending a demonstration at Whakarua Park bv Mr. Guy Cassin, physical welfare officer, Gisborne.

In the evening a larger gathering absorbed as much of his coaching as possible at the pavilion. Opening of Shooting Season Traffic through the bottle-neck of the main street in Ruatoria on the morning of May 14 an hour before dawn was unusually heavy for that hour. At middav a large flight of wild duck passed over the town making up the Waiapu River. Judging by reports, duck are plentiful but very “canny” this year.

Not Just a “Fish” Story. A small party of fishermen, comprising Messrs. Goldie Wheeler, Tom Walters, Ted Garth, Harry and Tom Hovell and Mrs. Garth, recently had a 10-minute struggle with a large shark at Matakaoa Point. The fish was plaved bv Mr. Garth until it was clearly visible just beneath the surface at the edge of the rocks. Though the party had a gaff, the 10-foot shark was considered too risky a proposition to handle and it was just played for some time until it broke free.

Mr. Tawhai Baker. Rotorua, spent a short hnlidav with Mr. and Mrs. T. Wi Repa. Kakariki, Ruatoria. He returned to Rotorua on Thursday.—Mrs. F. Jackson. Auckland, will arrive shortly to spend a few days with her son and his family at Kakariki.—Miss E. Garth celebrated her eighteenth birthday at a part.v at her home on Monday evening.—Miss Dawn Smyth left Ruatoria on Thursday for Wellington, where she will join a party of 14 others from lona College to visit Mt. Cook.—Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Penfold, Minginui, are spending a short holiday with Mr. and Mrs. J. Penfold. Ruatoria. Miss Daphne Penfold, of the Cook Hospital, is also spending a holiday with her parents.
