U.K.-ARGENTINE MEAT SUPPLY TALKS GOING WELL
(11 a.m.) BUENOS AIRES, May 19. The negotiations between Britain and Argentina for a meat contract appeared last night to be close to success.
An official of the Argentine Foreign Office said: “Negotiations are going on quickly now. We await a reply from the British Government."
The New York Times correspondent in Buenos Aires believes that _ the price agreement will involve a sliding scale in which the price will vary within a set range as Argentina agrees to accept certain luxury goods among imports from Britain. In other words, the more luxury goods Argentina accepts the more Britain will pay for meat. I Argentina appears to have reached nowhere in her demand for the convertibility of sterling. The British consider the pact will be historic to the extent that it will acknowledge inconvertibility of sterling for the first time in a trade pact.
