352 STATE HOUSES CONSTRUCTED IN GISBORNE

In all, 30,724 Slate housing units have been erected and handed over in the Dominion up to March 31, 1949, 352 of which have been erected in Gisborne. For future building 131 sections arc available in Gisborne, 20 of these sections being developed and 111 undeveloped.

These figures are contained in a statement made on Saturday by Mr. D. W. Coleman. M.P., Parliamentary Undersecretary. on State houses constructed by the State Housing Construction Department. The number of applications for houses in New Zealand, stated as being urgent, received by the State Advances Corporation is' 28,397 and the total estimated satisfactory applications, including urgent, numbers 47,370. Units at present under construction in New Zealand are numbered at 3587; units in contracts let, but not yet started, 2044; units in contracts sited, but not yet let, 2747; unit sections on hand for future building, 15,290. The respective housing districts cover a much wider area than the town named as the district. For instance, the Auckland district goes up through the Bay of Islands, and the Wellington district takes in Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson. All districts cover a similarly wide area.
