NEARLY 400 HOUSES “LOST” BECAUSE OF BUILDING HOLD-UP

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. May 13. The hold up in the building industry has resulted in £870,000 worth of work being lost, according to estimates taken out by the Auckland Master Builders’ Association. It was 12 weeks yesterday since 1400 carpenters were dismissed for going slow. Seven hundred of these men, it Is estimated, are still out of the industry. The association considers that nearly 400 houses have been “lost.” Painters and plasterers generally have caught up with back work and are now looking for sufficient work to keep them going in the meantime. Maintenance and minor repair work is absorbing the available labour, but how long this will last cannot be determined.
