Hong Kong Unperturbed By Recent Events
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 13. The Communist attack on the sloop Amethyst on the Yangtse last month was regarded by British residents of Hong Kong as “just another incident” and life went along as usual. This statement was made by Mr. C. A. Henderson. retired electrical engineer, Motueka, who returned today after spending some months visiting his son on the staff of Cable and Wireless, Limited.
There was no panic in Hong Kong when he left at the end of April concerning the advance of the Communist forces in China. Most people believed that “everything would be all right.” The presence of British naval, military and air forces gave residents confidence and this was increased by news that reinforcements were being sent.
