(P.A.) ‘ AUCKLAND, May 13. The end of the poliomyelitis epidemic which has affected the North Island since November, 1947, was predicted today by the medical officer of health at Auckland, Dr. A. W. S. Thompson. To the end of April, Dr. Thompson said one person In every thousand in the central Auckland health district had been admitted to hospital with poliomyelitis since the outbreak. In no extensive epidemic elsewhere had the incidence reached two per thousand. In the fifteen months ended January 31, 1129 cases were treated. During 1948 there were 57 deaths. Newspaper reports indicated that deaths since then were five. The incidence in the city was only half that in the rural areas.
