NO STRINGS TO COMMONWEALTH AID TO BURMESE
RANGOON, May 8,
A Burmese Government statement announced today that the British Commonwealth decision to offer assistance to Burma was a spontaneous one without any conditions attached to it.
An official announcement on the aid programme has been delayed pending a general agreement on its text. Well-informed quarters '•believe that while all the Commonwealth - countries are underwriting an aid programme, Britain. India' and Pakistan will be directly concerned with the actual aid administration. The monetary value of the aid is expected to be sufficient to cover Burma’s Budget deficit. Increased arms and ammunition are also expected to help to quell the extending revolt. “The new India and Pakistan have proved the wisdom of their decisions to remain in the Commonwealth,” says a semi-official paper which adds that it is to be hoped that Burma is not yet too late to learn this lesson.
