Greek Army Clears East Macedonian Area
(11 a.m.) ATHENS, May 9. The Greek Army forces have completed the occupation of the whole of Anghistron region in Eastern Macedonia.
The fortress of Roupesso on the Metaxas Line to the east of Beles, near the Bulgarian border, was taken by assault after hard fighting. The defenders crossed into Bulgarian territory.
Press reports from Peloponnesus said that the odies of 350 insurgents, who were found under melting snow on Mount Helmos, were those of men who were trying to escape the Greek Army’s mopping-up operations. They took refuge on the heights and died of cold.
Eighteen people, including a priest and a guerrilla chieftain, who were captured in battles again the insurgents, were sentenced to death by Salonika and Larissa military courts today for “common crimes.”
