Grocers Criticise Strongly Statement On Price Controls

(P.A.)

AUCKLAND, May 10

Strong criticism of the statement by the director of price controls, Mr. H. L. Wise, on Saturday was expressed yesterday at the jubilee meeting of the Auckland Master Grocers’ Association. The meeting carried a resolution expressing resentment against Mr. Wise’s statement that retail grocery margins may be further reduced in view of information in possession of the division. The association asked how the division could know the ability of the trade to absorb reduced margins, seeing the percentage had been operating for six months and the accounts for that period had not yet been finalised and also what measures the division proposed to implement to enable grocers to recover the increased wage cost operative as from the beginning of next pionth.
