MR. LANG CLAIMS MIGRATION PLAN HAS “RUN AMOK”
SYDNEY, May 6.
Mr. J. T. Lang challenged the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, over immigration and accused him of repudiating the pledges he made on behalf of the Government.
Commenting on Mr. Chifley’s statement that Australia could absorb migrants at their present rate of arrival, Mr Lang said that the present plan appeared to be to accept migrants whether Australia could absorb them or not. He recalled that in 1945 the Minister of Immigration, Mr. A. A. Calwell, announced a ceiling of 70,000 migrants yearly as the absolute limit and gave a pledge that there would be no largescale immigration until there were enough houses. “The immigration scheme seems to have run amok,” declared Mr. Lang.
